MANILA, Philippines — A Las Piñas court has sentenced a Taiwanese man to life in prison for possession of more than 71 kilos of shabu valued at P484.16 million.

The Las Piñas Regional Trial Court Branch 255 found Chen Te Ho Chang guilty of violating Republic Act 9165, the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act. He was fined P2 million.

The court decision dated June 16 was made public yesterday by the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency.

PDEA chief Isagani Nerez said Chen’s conviction is an affirmation that the government’s campaign against illegal drugs extends beyond arrest and seizures.

“We remain steadfast in building strong cases that can withstand judicial scrutiny and ensure that drug traffickers are convicted and punished to the full extent of the law,” Nerez said in a statement.

Records showed that PDEA operatives raided a warehouse leased by Chen in Barangay Manuyo, Las Piñas on June 13, 2017.

Anti-narcotics agents confiscated 71.2 kilos of shabu.

Prior to the raid, Chen was arrested during an interdiction operation in a hotel in Parañaque on June 13, 2017.

The Taiwanese yielded 36.76 kilos of shabu worth P250 million.

Nerez warned drug trafficking groups that continue to use leased warehouses and storage facilities to conceal illegal drugs.

“The PDEA, together with its law enforcement partners, remains vigilant in identifying and dismantling these logistics networks to deny criminal organizations safe havens for their illicit operations,” he said.
