MANILA, Philippines — A fire reached the fourth alarm at dawn yesterday in Tondo, Manila, displacing 200 families and disrupting port operations.
According to the Manila Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, the fire started at 1:13 a.m. at Gate 10 at Parola Compound and was extinguished at 5:26 a.m.
Sixteen fire trucks responded to keep the blaze from spreading to houses, mostly made of light materials.
The blaze prompted the Manila International Container Terminal to issue a heavy traffic advisory as the Port Management Office-National Capital Region South said the entry of container trucks into the port was affected.
Barangay 20 Chairman Anthony Gus said the fire might have started from the second floor of a house of a man identified only as Toto.
Arson probers are investigating if the fire was intentionally set, after a report said a resident who lost temper set the house ablaze.
No one was reported hurt in the incident, although 200 families took temporary shelter at the Delpan Covered Court.
The Bureau of Fire Protection said about 100 structures were affected. Damage to property was placed at P400,000.
