MANILA, Philippines — Present society’s obsession with cellphones might make people blind to the hardships experienced by others, according to Apostolic Nuncio to the Philippines Archbishop Charles Brown.

The Catholic faithful should instead devote more time to building an authentic devotion to Mother Mary, who inspires mercy and service to people in need, Brown said.

“The first thing we realize about Mary is that she is very attentive, always aware, always noticing others’ needs. She is the mother of mercy, always attentive to the voice of her children,” he said.

Digital finance

More Filipinos are moving into digital finance, a Philippine Institute for Development Studies found.

Account ownership nearly doubled, from 29 percent in 2019 to 56 percent in 2021.

Digital payments now account for 57.4 percent of retail transactions, but more than half of the population remains outside the formal financial system, researchers said.

Digital adoption is accelerating, but financial inclusion is not keeping pace, they said. — Bella Cariaso
