MANILA, Philippines — There is no reward system for police officers who will carry out police chief Gen. Nicolas Torre III’s order to be more proactive in running after suspected criminals.
In an interview over dzBB, Philippine National Police (PNP) spokesperson Brig. Gen. Jean Fajardo clarified that what Torre was considering is to give incentives to police officers so they will not hesitate to conduct arrests.
Fajardo said the incentive is in the form of reimbursements of travel expenses for PNP personnel who will attend court hearings once the suspects they have arrested go to trial.
She said one of the reasons why police officers are hesitant to conduct arrests is because of the expenses they will incur when attending court proceedings.
Among them are police officers assigned with drug enforcement units who usually attend three to four court hearings in a week.
Apart from reimbursement of expenses, Torre vowed to further strengthen the PNP Legal Service, which is in charge of defending police officers facing criminal cases in the line of duty.
Torre allayed concerns of the Commission on Human Rights and other rights groups, stressing there is no quota system on his order to ramp up arrests.
He stressed police officers who will commit misconduct such as planting evidence and other violations will face sanctions.
