MANILA, Philippines — Incoming Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Maj. Gen. Nicolas Torre III is a decisive official who means business and will deliver results in the government’s anti-criminality campaign, Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla said.

Remulla said he is looking forward to collaborating with Torre who will be the 31st PNP chief after the turnover of command today at Camp Crame.

For Remulla, President Marcos made the right decision in choosing Torre as the successor of outgoing PNP chief Gen. Rommel Marbil.

“If the President says ‘make the streets safer,’ we can be sure of that because General Torre is very conclusive,” he said in a statement.

He noted that Torre is known for his commitment to duty and is dedicated to protecting people just like his father, a former police officer who was assassinated in Lutayan, Sultan Kudarat.

“What I like about Torre is that he finishes his job without excuses,” Remulla said.

Torre has already received his marching orders from Marcos, Remulla said, adding the incoming PNP chief has good rapport with the President.

Remulla expressed confidence that Torre’s leadership will drive transformation, innovation and strengthen the PNP’s mandate to serve and protect.

Meanwhile, the Philippine National Police Academy alumni, collectively known as Lakans, expressed their gratitude to the President for choosing Torre, a PNPA alumni, as the next head of the police force.

“President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. will be remembered as the first Chief Executive to appoint a PNPA graduate as chief of the PNP, an act of recognition that resonates deeply with all who have walked the halls of the Academy and served under its ideals,” the PNPA Alumni Association Inc. said in a statement.

Torre is a graduate of PNPA Tagapaglunsad Class of 1993.

The Lakans said they are united and fully support Torre as he embarks on his mission in leading the 235,000-strong PNP.

On the other hand, Vice President Sara Duterte only laughed when asked to comment on the appointment of Torre as the new PNP chief.
