MANILA, Philippines — Principals in Valenzuela schools have proposed that students be required to use transparent bags to facilitate the inspection of belongings, amid reports of violence in schools in the wake of a shooting incident that left three students dead and 20 wounded in Tacloban City.

The school officials proposed the requirement during an emergency meeting Valenzuela Mayor Wes Gatchalian convened to discuss measures that would strengthen security in campuses.

Among the measures discussed were tighter security in schools, installation of additional closed-circuit television cameras, conduct of regular emergency and lockdown drills, and the expansion of counseling and psychosocial support services for students.

Officials tackled early intervention programs for students needing mental health support and closer coordination among the schools, police, barangays and city government.

Gatchalian stressed that parents and the community play a crucial role in guiding the youth and strengthening campaigns against bullying, violence and gang influence.

Representatives from the Department of Education, Philippine National Police, public and private schools, various local government offices and parents attended the meeting.
