Mody Floranda, president of the transport group PISTON, on March 16, said that the strike is intended to pressure the administration of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. into lowering fuel costs by removing value-added and excise taxes.
Additionally, the group is calling for a fuel price ceiling of P55 per liter and a P5 fare hike to counter the economic impact of Middle East tensions.
Several classes have been suspended or moved online due to the transport strike.
The Philippine National Police (PNP) also said it will deploy approximately 180,000 personnel to ensure peace and order during the transport strike.
The PNP and the Metropolitan Development Authority will also provide “libreng sakay” for commuters during the strike.
