The author with co-birthday celebrant Lanie Fong
DINDO GUTIERREZ
It has been almost two years since Agile Zamora invited me to join the Amigas Group, which was just being formed.
I am not a group person and was initially inclined to decline. But Agile is such a good and supportive friend that I accepted — and I’m glad I did.
Every two months, we celebrate those whose birthdays fall within that period. The gathering on April 28 was held in honor of Lanie Fong’s 54th birthday and mine, both in March, at Fables by Kenneth Cobonpue located at the outer left corner of Grand Hyatt Manila. Creative modern art pieces hang from the ceiling of Kenneth’s restaurant.
It is truly a sight to see and appreciate such beautiful artistic creations.

Although the dinner was set for 7 p.m., guests continued to arrive until 8 p.m. and even 9 p.m. We were about 40 people in all, seated across three tables.
During the first two to three dinners, I only knew the two or three people seated near me, as the setup was usually one long table. Now, I’ve gained at least a dozen new friends, so I’m glad Agile recruited me.
Many of the women come from well-known and well-respected families. We are of different nationalities but mostly Filipinas, except for an Australian who is already a Philippine resident.

The evening lasted until 1 a.m., according to Agile, though I left at 11 p.m. after blowing out the single candle on my surprise birthday cake, with “Happy Birthday” written all over the plate.
