MANILA, Philippines — Shane Reterta rose to the occasion for La Salle in Game 1 to help her team inch closer to a title redemption and perfect campaign in the UAAP Season 88 women’s volleyball tournament.
Reterta helped La Salle shrug off a rusty start with the telling blows in the first set, setting the tone for a 25-23, 25-18, 25-18 sweep of National University in Finals Game 1 on Wednesday at Mall of Asia Arena.
The outside spiker finished with 11 points, 23 receptions, and nine digs.

“For me, I just thought about my performance last game. If I can’t do better than that, I’ll just try to match it or improve if I can,” said Reterta in Filipino.
“And for the team, I think it really showed how hard we’ve been working in training. We know we’re tired every day, but it’s all for our championship game.”
Reterta has been a thorn in NU’s side since their last elimination game, where she delivered 21 points, 18 excellent receptions, and 15 digs to complete a 14-game elimination round sweep for an outright finals.

With La Salle coming off a 17-day hiatus, Reterta joined hands with Angel Canino and Amie Provido to spark the Lady Spikers into action in the first set.
“At first, it was really hard for us because the score was tight. There were even times when they were ahead. So we had to catch up and really work for it. We just stayed patient and kept pushing, and I think the team showed a good performance overall,” said Reterta.
La Salle captain Shevana Laput, meanwhile, finished with 11 points on a 10-of-33 spiking clip.
“Based on what they studied, Shevana was following the plan, but I told her the situation was different. I advised her that once she sees the opportunity, she should go all out on her attack,” said La Salle coach Ramil De Jesus.
“At first, she was hesitating and feeling her way, which hurt her confidence. I told her not to be afraid of getting blocked. We have coverage anyway. By the third set, she started to figure it out.”
Despite their captain’s struggles, Reterta stepped up for La Salle, which can wrap up the title in Game 2 on Saturday.
