MANILA, Philippines — The University of the Philippines (UP) faculty asked the Commission on Higher Education to scrap the reframed General Education (GE) curriculum amid the CHED’s decision to defer its implementation to 2028.

In a statement yesterday, UP professors opposed the Reframed General Education Curriculum Component of CHED.

“The proposal should be scrapped because it is an attack on the academic freedom of colleges and universities,” UP professors said.

CHED chairperson Shirley Agrupis has announced the suspension of the implementation of the reframed GE curriculum for school year 2026-2027.

Agrupis said the commission hopes to implement the reframed GE curriculum in 2028 to allow further review and consultations with stakeholders.

“The proposal did not go through a democratic consultation and process. It has no basis because CHED did not conduct a comprehensive assessment of the current GE curriculum,” the UP faculty said.

The UP professors said reducing the number of GE units would displace teachers.

“The current GE curriculum should be strengthened instead of making arbitrary proposals,” they said.
