ILOCOS NORTE, Philippines – Masbate’s Courtney Jewel Trangia ended her Palarong Pambansa days with a fitting finale after securing her third and final gold medal in the secondary girls’ discus throw competition. 

The 17-year-old athletics star, who also earned a a scholarship offer from the University of Santo Tomas, won with a throw distance of 36.72 meters, beating NCR’s Heart Duarte (35.73m) and Northern Mindanao’s Baby Gryll Alforo (34.69m).

Still, Trangia felt she could have done better.

Hindi po ako satisfied kasi po hindi po iyon ang record ko (I’m not satisfied because that’s not my record),” Trangia told Rappler.

A graduating senior high school student at the Masbate Sports Academy, Trangia has been one of Palaro’s dominant athletes since the national grassroots competition returned post-pandemic.

Trangia bagged her first Palaro gold medal during her debut in the 2023 edition in Marikina City with a record of 35.66 meters. 

The following year in Cebu City, she came back even stronger, setting a new Palaro record of 39.47  meters. 

Aside from Palaro, Trangia has proven herself in several national competitions, bagging  three consecutive gold medals in Batang Pinoy, as well as winning honors in overseas competitions. 

Her coach, Edgar Briones dela Peña, confirmed that Trangia is set to join the athletics program of UST in Manila. 

Trangia’s school also praised the young standout for bringing honor yet again.

“Trangia’s triumph not only highlights the school’s success in athlete development but also reinforces Masbate’s growing presence in the national athletic stage,” the school’s social media post said. – Rappler.com
