MANILA, Philippines — The Quezon City government has committed to provide permanent and dignified housing to thousands of victims in the fire that hit a residential community along NIA Road in Barangay Pinyahan on March 6.
Mayor Joy Belmonte said the city government would partner with the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD) and the National Housing Authority (NHA) to establish an in-city vertical housing for the affected residents.
“We are working closely with DHSUD to develop an in-city vertical housing project. We want to assure affected families that they will be prioritized and will benefit from the housing we are planning to build,” Belmonte said in a statement.
“This project will ensure that families affected by the fire can return to a safe, secure and dignified home in our city,” she added.
Belmonte earlier visited the site with DHSUD Secretary Jose Ramon Aliling and NHA General Manager Joeben Tai, where they agreed to develop multi-story residential buildings in the area as part of the city’s in-city resettlement plan for fire victims.
The housing project will be implemented under the national government’s Expanded Pambansang Pabahay Para sa Pilipino Program.
Construction is expected to begin once the development plan is finalized, with the first housing units targeted for delivery by the end of 2027.
“While the housing project is being developed, the Quezon City government will provide rental subsidies to help affected families secure temporary shelter. Additional financial assistance has also been pledged by DHSUD, NHA and the Department of Social Welfare and Development to help cover rental expenses,” the local government said.
The affected residents are staying at seven evacuation centers.
