BADOC, Ilocos Norte , Philippines — A cargo vessel ran aground in this town on Monday, causing an oil spill that affected about 15 meters of the shoreline, according to the Philippine Coast Guard.
The PCG said spill booms were installed along the coastal waters of Barangay La Virgen Milagrosa to prevent oil from spreading to nearby villages.
Aside from spill booms, absorbent pads were laid out to help remove the oil.
Reports said that officials and crewmembers of the M/V LCT MSCI 1 opted for an emergency beaching after discovering that the vessel had listed amid rough sea conditions.
The vessel was carrying gravel when it departed the Onri Port for Calayan in Cagayan.
Authorities said that a mixture of oil and water has spread to about 15 meters of the coastline.
Aside from the PCG, members of the Bureau of Fire Protection, Philippine National Police and Marine Battalion Landing Team-8 secured the area.
