VNL Week 2: USA completes dominant sweep of PH leg

MANILA, Philippines — The United States completed a perfect Women’s Volleyball Nations League (VNL) Week 2 in Pasig City.

Team USA dropped only one set in four games, losing the second frame to Serbia, but it completed a 4-0 sweep of its Philippine leg with a 25-22, 18-25, 25-16, 25-20 win on Sunday at Philsports Arena.

Avery Skinner led the charge for the Americans with 18 points from 16 kills, one block, and an ace, while Logan Eggleston backstopped her with 17 before heading to Japan for the next leg.

“Super proud of the team. I know I think we did a really good job like you said of making adjustments of kind of just not knowing what to expect the other team to do and just being ready for anything and so I think that’s what helped us this week and I’m really excited to see what else we can do,” said Eggleston.

“This is really gonna help us you know obviously I think just momentum going in this tournament, it’s really nice to come out a week 4-0 and I’m excited to see what next week brings and how we can continue to the finals round,” she added.

USA won six straight games for a 7-1 record on top of the 18-nation league.

Captain Jordyn Poulter orchestrated their balanced offense, as Jordan Thompson chipped in 14 points and Asjia O’Neal added 10.

Serbia slid to a 2-6 record, with Nina Cajic leading the way with 18 points. Anja Zubic and Hena Kurtagic had 12 and 11 points, respectively.
