WATCH: Aquino sets 7-point agenda in addressing education crisis

Senator Bam Aquino, who chairs the basic education panel, says his committee will probe why the government is spending P2.5 million per classroom construction

MANILA, Philippines – In a privilege speech on Wednesday, July 30, Senator Bam Aquino, who chairs the basic education committee, sounded the alarm on the country’s education crisis.

Aquino identified key issues that need urgent attention: nutrition, classrooms, textbooks, connectivity, teacher support, the learning gap, and employability.

“We will exercise our legislative oversight into investigating the gap between the costs for building classrooms. Through our consultations, we learned that there are nongovernmental organizations that spend less than a million to construct a classroom, but why is that the government is spending double, almost P2.5 million per classroom,” Aquino said in a mix of English and Filipino.
