Escudero says Senate to vote on SC’s Sara impeachment ruling on August 6

Senate President Chiz Escudero says the Senate should comply with the SC ruling or risk a constitutional crisis

MANILA, Philippines – Senate President Chiz Escudero said on Tuesday, July 29, that the Senate will put to a vote on August 6 the Supreme Court’s decision barring the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte.

Senate President Escudero said the decision was made during a closed-door meeting with senators held before Tuesday’s session. Senate Minority Leader Tito Sotto requested the August 6 schedule to give them time to review the SC’s 97-page decision.

Earlier on Tuesday, Escudero said the Senate should comply with the SC ruling or risk a “constitutional crisis.” He added that there is no need to reconvene as a court, since the SC decision stated that the Senate has no jurisdiction over the case. “Mas safe na Senado ang mag desisyon rito. Dahil baka matingnan pa na paglabag ang pagconvene ng impeachment court matapos ang desisyon ng Korte Suprema,” he explained. (It’s safer for the Senate to make the decision here, because reconvening the impeachment court after the Supreme Court’s ruling might even be seen as a violation.)
