MANILA, Philippines — The southwest monsoon has started to affect parts of Luzon, ushering in the beginning of the rainy season with persistent rains and overcast skies across the northern and western sections of the region.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) reported yesterday that a developing frontal system over Northern Luzon is interacting with moist winds from the southwest, resulting in widespread rainfall.
This weather pattern has intensified rains over Batanes, the Babuyan Islands, Ilocos Region, Cagayan, Isabela, Zambales and Bataan, where flooding and landslides remain possible due to continuous downpours.
Metro Manila, the Cordillera Administrative Region, Central Luzon, Calabarzon and Occidental Mindoro are also experiencing gloomy skies and intermittent showers brought about by the same monsoon system.
The rains are expected to persist through the weekend, with the southwest monsoon forecast to continue affecting much of Luzon until early next week.
Meanwhile, other parts of the country, particularly the Visayas and Mindanao, are expected to have generally fair weather conditions. Any rain activity in these regions will likely come from isolated thunderstorms, mostly occurring in the afternoon or evening.
Daytime temperatures reflect the seasonal transition, with Metro Manila expected to range from 25 to 30 degrees Celsius on Saturday. Baguio City will remain cool with temperatures between 16 and 22 degrees, while Tagaytay may experience highs of 29 degrees.
In Southern Luzon, Legazpi is forecast to reach up to 34 degrees. In Palawan, Puerto Princesa may see temperatures ranging from 25 to 30 degrees.
The Visayas will experience warmer conditions, with Metro Cebu and Iloilo reaching highs of 34 degrees, and Tacloban slightly cooler at 33 degrees. In Mindanao, Metro Davao is forecast to reach 34 degrees, while Cagayan de Oro and Zamboanga City may record maximum temperatures of 33 and 32 degrees, respectively.
From June 1 to June 3, PAGASA expects the southwest monsoon to continue influencing weather over Luzon, with Metro Manila likely to remain rainy until Sunday and Baguio City until Tuesday. Legazpi City and the Bicol Region are forecast to have generally fair weather during this period, while Visayas and Mindanao will remain mostly dry with isolated afternoon thunderstorms.
Despite the widespread rainfall, PAGASA has not issued any gale warnings. Sea conditions remain generally calm, although localized storms could cause brief disruptions for small vessels and fishermen.
