MANILA, Philippines — This weekend, it's moms who get to be in the limelight as Filipinos all over the country celebrate Mother's Day on Sunday.
There are numerous activities going on this weekend to honor or centering around mothers — people can have their pick of what they do — as well as a regular dash of end-of-the-week fun.
Check out this calendar of events happening this weekend (May 8-10).
For moms
Araneta City will have a whole bunch of activities dedicated to mothers this weekend, higlighted by the Well Mama Expo in Gateway Mall 2's Quantum Skyview, the For Tiny Hands and Mommy Expo in the main Gateway Mall's activity area, and the Mother's Day Market in Ali Mall.
The former expo features products, services, and food focused on mothers’ health and well-being, while the latter will also have products for infants, plus a glam station for moms to get the pampering experience they deserve.
The Mother's Day Market will notably have products from Quezon City-based solo parents, persons with disabilities, persons deprived of liberty, and small business owners.
On Sunday morning, the aRUNeta Run Club will hold a special fun run around Araneta City and exercise Zumba-style at the Green Gate of Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Later that afternoon, moms can head to Farmers Plaza to learn new recipes and cooking techniques at the Kitchen Queens cooking show or participate in another physical activity — this time dressing up with their kids — at Ali Mall's Mommies on the Move for the Aloha Dance Festival.
New World Makati Hotel restaurants Café 1228 and Jasmine are offering two different dining experiences to celebrate mothers.
Café 1228's international buffet gets a level-up with US prime rib, fresh seafood, Japanese specialties, Asian favorites, a whole lechon, and free-flow beverages. Dining moms will also get a celebratory drink and a prepared floral arrangement.
Jasmine will have a more intimate offering with its Mother's Day Yum Cha, available at lunch and dinner, which includes handcrafted dim sum, premium barbecue dishes, and elegantly executed mains.
Meanwhile, in Mandaluyong's Shangri-La Plaza, the mall's atriums will be hosting expert talks, live performances, a book launch, wellness workshops, fashion and storytelling sessions throughout the weekend.
Concerts
After taking over the SM Mall of Asia Arena on Friday, the Playback Punk Rock & Emo Music Festival will head over to Cebu.
The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, Dashboard Confessional and Faber Drive will be performing at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino on Saturday for this latest edition.
Meanwhile, at the Newport Performing Arts Theater, Nina Girado will mark the 20th anniversary of her iconic "Nina Live!" album at her "Nina XX" concert.
Joining "Asia's Diamond Soul Siren" at the show are fellow R&B singers Jay Durias, Kris Lawrence and Thor.
Finally on Sunday, Pixies will perform in Manila for the first time ever by taking on the Filinvest Tent stage in Alabang, Muntinlupa.
Craft beer, anyone?
The MABREWHAY Craft Beer Festival is back for a third time, open free to all guests this weekend at the Ayala Triangle Gardens.
Leading craft breweries like Engkanto, Papa Bolo, Bruijo and Kumintang can be found alongside live local music.
Runs
There are a couple of races to look forward to this weekend in different parts of Metro Manila.
On Saturday morning, the Popeye Run will be held in Pasay's CCP Complex for families to participate in, while later in the afternoon at the Filinvest Events Gronuds is Music Run Manila, where different tunes are played in the 5-kilometer and 10-kilometer races.
