MANILA, Philippines — Tropical Depression Wilma continued to maintain its strength while staying almost stationary over the coastal waters of Can-avid, Eastern Samar on Saturday afternoon, December 6, state weather bureau PAGASA said.

As of 4:00 p.m., Wilma was packing maximum sustained winds of 45 kilometers per hour near the center, gusts of up to 55 kph and a central pressure of 1004 hPa. 

Strong winds from the system were extending up to 180 kilometers from its center.

  • southern portion of Oriental Mindoro (Bulalacao, Mansalay, Roxas, Bongabong,Bansud)

  • northernmost portion of Palawan (Araceli, Dumaran, El Nido, Taytay, Roxas, San Vicente) including Cuyo, Calamian, and Cagayancillo Islands

Areas under Signal No. 1 may experience possible minimal to minor impacts from strong winds, ranging from 39 kph to 61 kph.

The northeast monsoon will also bring strong to gale-force gusts over the following areas not under wind signal: 

  • Saturday, December 6: Most of Luzon, Visayas and Zamboanga Peninsula
  • Sunday, December 7: Most of Luzon, Visayas, and Zamboanga Peninsula
  • Monday, December 8: Most of Luzon, Eastern Visayas and Western Visayas

The state weather bureau said that localized heavy rains and strong winds may still occur outside the landfall point and forecast cone.

Track, intensity

On its forecast track, Wilma is expected to make initial landfall over Eastern Samar or Northern Samar between Saturday afternoon and evening. 

It is then projected to traverse the Visayas until Sunday, December 7, before emerging over the Sulu Sea and possibly passing over northern Palawan by Monday morning. 

PAGASA said that the system may weaken into a remnant low while crossing Visayas due to dry intrusion from the northeast monsoon.
