MANILA, Philippines — The Museum of Contemporary Art and Design (MCAD) offers a free public screening of a collection of socio-political documentaries that highlight the crucial role of women filmmakers.
The selection was curated by feminist scholar Eloisa May Hernandez of the University of the Philippines.
“Women documentary filmmakers such as Ramona Diaz, Sari Dalena, Kiri Dalena, Ditsi Carolino, Cha Escala, Wena Sanchez and Pabelle Manikan have been active for the past few decades exposing various social issues such as land reform, plight of indigenous peoples, child labor, sexual abuse and peasant and workers’ rights,” she stated.
For the special screening at MCAD, Eloisa May handpicked three works: “Walang Rape sa Bontok” (2014), written by Carla Pulido Ocampo and directed by Lester Valle, “Aswang” (2019) by Alyx Ayn Arumpac and “Maria” (2023) by She Andes.
“These documentaries by and about women are a testament to the courage, strength, exceptional skill and critical insights of these women documentary filmmakers,” she said.
“Walang Rape sa Bontok,” a 2015 Gaward Urian awardee for Best Documentary, follows two Filipino women, both survivors of sexual abuse, as they immerse themselves in Bontoc culture to revalidate the discovery of renowned anthropologist June Prill-Brett on the absence of rape and rape culture in Bontok Igorot culture. It will be screened on April 23.
“Aswang” is a brave portrayal of the gruesome extra-judicial killings (EJKs) under the administration of former Pres. Rodrigo Duterte. It nabbed Best Picture, Best Director, Best Documentary and Best Cinematography at the 2021 Gawad Urian Awards and was hailed as the first documentary to receive the Best Film Award at the Filipino Academy of Movie Arts & Sciences Awards (FAMAS). It is slated for April 24.
“Maria” was the first full-length docu featured in the 19 years of Cinemalaya, which subsequently won Best Documentary at the 72nd Filipino Academy of Movie Arts & Sciences Awards. It focuses on the journey of three Marias: a staunch supporter-turned-victim, a wife and mother fighting for rights and a woman who became a beacon of hope — in search of truth and justice during the Duterte reign. It will be screened on April 25.
The screenings are free and open to the public and will be held every noon on the scheduled dates.
It will be showcased at the M320 Case Room of the De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde (DLS-CSB) Taft Campus in Malate, Manila.
