MANILA, Philippines – Internationally acclaimed Filipino women’s rights advocate Elizabeth Angsioco has died, her family confirmed late on Wednesday, July 23.

“Our mother, Elizabeth Angsioco, passed-away earlier today. Despite the overwhelming sadness, we are all getting ready to celebrate her life and legacy,” Angsioco’s daughter Mabs Costales said in a Facebook post.

Angsioco was the national chairperson of the Democratic Socialist Women of the Philippines (DSWP). Up until her death, she was active in women and girls’ advocacy. In end-June, she represented her organization in participating at the United Nations Women-sponsored roundtable discussion on feminist foreign policy.

Earlier in 2025, she was active in campaigning for the adolescent pregnancy prevention bill, but its progress was severely affected when a religious coalition spread disinformation about its contents.

Angsioco was deeply immersed with women in poor communities, engaging with those who were abused and young women who lacked resources on sexual and reproductive health.

She fought for the legalization of divorce in the Philippines, the last country in the world apart from the Vatican without it.

Angsioco’s wake will run from July 24 to 27 in Quezon City, Costales said.

“The sadness is profound. The loss is overwhelming. She was a powerful force in many, many lives. Family and friends, do join us in celebration of her multitudes!” she said. – Rappler.com
