MANILA, Philippines — World leaders and partner governments have expressed solidarity with the Philippines and signaled readiness to extend aid after a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck Mindanao on Monday, June 8.
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said Japan was prepared to assist the Philippines as authorities assessed the damage from the powerful quake.
"Japan stands ready to provide all possible assistance that the Philippines may need," Takaichi said in a post on X.
"Japan always stands with the people of the Philippines," she added.
Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te also said Taiwan was ready to help.
"Our thoughts are with the people of the Philippines," Lai said on X, adding that Taiwan was praying for recovery and rebuilding efforts.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences to the families of those killed and offered prayers for the recovery of those injured.
"India stands in solidarity with the people and the Government of the Philippines," Modi said in a post on X.
Embassies offer support
The United States Embassy in Manila said it was monitoring the situation and coordinating with Philippine authorities.
"We continue to monitor the situation closely in coordination with Philippine authorities and stand ready to support Philippine-led response efforts," the US Embassy said.
The United Nations in the Philippines also said it was working with the government and partners to assess the impact of the earthquake.
"Together with the government and partners, we are assessing the earthquake’s impact and remain ready to support response and recovery efforts," the UN in the Philippines said.
The German and French embassies also released messages of solidarity to affected communities.
"We extend our heartfelt thoughts and sympathies to the victims, their loved ones, and all communities affected," the German Embassy Manila said.
The French embassy, meanwhile, said its country "extends its heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims and expresses its full solidarity with the Filipino people and the authorities responding to this disaster."
Ambassadors send condolences
Australian Ambassador to the Philippines Marc Innes-Brown expressed condolences to those who lost loved ones in the quake.
"Our thoughts go out to those affected by today’s earthquakes off Mindanao. Our deepest condolences to those who lost loved ones. Wishing the injured and communities affected a speedy recovery," Innes-Brown said in a post on X.
Japanese Ambassador to the Philippines also said Japan was praying for those affected, especially communities in coastal provinces in Mindanao and nearby areas.
"We are praying for the safety of everyone following the 7.8 magnitude earthquake, especially in several coastal provinces in Mindanao and the surrounding areas," the ambassador said in an X post.
