MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Health (DOH) has reported 190 cases of HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) infection involving migrant workers for the first three months of the year. The figure is three percent higher than the HIV diagnoses among migrant workers logged in the same period last year.
Of the number, 166 were male and 24 were female. Most cases acquired HIV through sexual contact.
According to the DOH, since 1984, 10,813 diagnosed cases have been migrant workers.
Of these, 10,603 acquired HIV through sexual contact, 19 through needle sharing, nine through exposure to blood, three through needlestick injury and 179 had no data on mode of transmission.
Earlier, the DOH said a total of 5,101 confirmed cases of HIV were recorded for the first quarter of the year.
Metro Manila, Calabarzon, Central Luzon, Davao, Western Visayas and Central Visayas recorded the highest number of infections, accounting for 69 percent of the total cases.
