MANILA, Philippines — Some 28 areas in the country were expected to experience the “danger” heat index, from 42 degrees to 45 degrees Celsius, as warm and humid weather prevailed during the midterm elections yesterday, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

The state agency said the highest heat index was forecast in Sangley Point, Cavite City and Catarman, Northern Samar with 45 degrees Celsius.

The heat index in Echague, Isabela; San lldefonso, Bulacan; Tayabas, Quezon; Ambulong, Tanauan, Batangas; Legazpi City, Albay; Juban, Sorsogon; Pili, Camarines Sur; Roxas City, Mambusao, Capiz; Dumangas, Iloilo and Butuan City, Agusan del Norte was expected to reach 43 degrees Celsius.

Meanwhile, a 42 degrees Celsius heat index was expected in Metro Manila; Laoag, Ilocos Norte; Dagupan City, Pangasinan; Bacnotan, La Union; Tuguegarao City, Cagayan; Subic Bay, Olongapo City; Infanta, Quezon; Coron, Palawan; San Jose, Occidental Mindoro; Puerto Princesa and Cuyo, Palawan; Masbate City, Masbate; Iloilo City, Iloilo; Guiuan, Eastern Samar and Maasin, Southern Leyte.

LPA dissipating

Meanwhile, a low-pressure area (LPA) located off the coastal waters of Palay, Negros Occidental is expected to dissipate, PAGASA said.

As of 3 p.m. yesterday, the LPA was still being monitored, but showed a very low chance of developing into a tropical cyclone.

Despite this, PAGASA warned that it will continue to bring moderate to heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and potential landslides across various areas, including the Visayas, Bicol Region, Mimaropa, Northern Mindanao, Zamboanga Peninsula, Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, Soccsksargen and Quezon province.

A separate LPA previously monitored by PAGASA has already dissipated.

The state agency also noted that the easterlies, or warm and humid winds from the Pacific, are currently affecting a large portion of the country. This weather pattern is expected to bring partly cloudy to cloudy skies with chances of localized thunderstorms, particularly in Metro Manila and nearby provinces during the afternoon and evening hours.

PAGASA’s regional offices will continue to issue thunderstorm and rainfall advisories, including heavy rainfall warnings when necessary.

Residents are urged to take safety precautions, especially during thunderstorm activity, and to avoid taking shelter under tall isolated trees, staying near bodies of water or handling electrical conductors during such conditions.

Weather forecasts for today indicate that Metro Manila will experience temperatures ranging from 25 to 34 degrees Celsius. Baguio City will be cooler with temperatures between 17 and 25 degrees Celsius, while Laoag will see temperatures from 26 to 33 degrees Celsius. Tuguegarao may reach highs of up to 36 degrees Celsius, while Legazpi and Tagaytay will experience temperatures from 26 to 32 degrees and 23 to 32 degrees, respectively.

In Palawan, both Puerto Princesa and the Kalayaan Islands are forecast to have temperatures ranging from 26 to 32 degrees Celsius.

In the Visayas, the northern portion may still experience occasional rains, while the southern areas are likely to see generally fair weather conditions with possible thunderstorms developing in the late afternoon or evening.

In Mindanao, similar weather patterns are expected, with no significant systems forecast to bring prolonged rainfall. Thunderstorms remain possible, especially in the evenings.

Iloilo and Cagayan de Oro will experience temperatures between 26 and 32 degrees Celsius, while Cebu and Zamboanga will see daytime highs ranging from 25 to 33 degrees. Tacloban is forecast to have temperatures from 25 to 31 degrees, while Davao can expect temperatures ranging from 25 to 32 degrees Celsius.

No gale warnings have been issued for any of the country’s seaboards.

For the three-day outlook, Metro Manila, Baguio City and Legazpi City are expected to experience generally fair weather up to Thursday. However, isolated thunderstorms remain likely, particularly in the afternoon and evening.

Daytime temperatures are forecast to stay within the same range, with Metro Manila at 26 to 34 degrees Celsius, Baguio at 17 to 25 degrees and Legazpi at 25 to 33 degrees.

In the Visayas, cities such as Cebu, Iloilo and Tacloban are not expected to experience any major weather disturbances, but may have localized thunderstorms.

The same forecast applies to Mindanao’s key cities, including Davao, Cagayan de Oro, and Zamboanga.

Rainfall in Metro Manila is projected to peak at 6.15 millimeters in the evening and 5.31 millimeters in the early morning. — Christine Boton
