COTABATO CITY, Philippines — Five Maranao villagers were wounded in an attack on Tuesday, May 19, in Barangay Pindolonan in Picong town in Lanao del Sur by armed men hostile to their clan leader.

The victims, Nassir Maruhom, Kalalaga Sultan and Ashia and Amrex, both surnamed Saripada, and a 13-year-old girl, whose name was withheld by police officials and local executives for being a minor, were immediately brought by emergency responders to a hospital in nearby Malabang, Lanao del Sur for treatment.

Local executives and Capt. Steffie Salanguit, spokesperson of the Police Regional Office-Bangsamoro Autonomous Region, told reporters on Wednesday that the victims were attacked by known enemies of their close relative, Samad Atil Saripada.

Their assailants, Jamel Macabanding, and his eight companions, Naongko, Rasa, Raki, Salamat, Toks, Piyangni, Samin and Omair, all surnamed Alampa, had immediately escaped, now subject of an extensive joint military-police manhunt.

Salanguit said local executives and the governor of Lanao del Sur, Mamintal Adiong, Jr., have assured to help personnel of the Picong Municipal Police Station file criminal cases against the culprits.
