MANILA, Philippines — Major news coverage like the midterm elections and earthquakes were among the trending topics searched by Filipinos in 2025.
Major search engine Google released its annual Year in Search list revealing the trends, personalities, and events that captured the interest of individuals in the Philippines.
The top trending topic was Gemini AI, Google's very own artificial intelligence tool, which was the only AI-related topic that figured in the overall Top 10.
Behind Gemini AI was the results of the 2025 midterm elections and the Roblox game "Grow A Garden." Completing the Top 5 was "earthquake near me" — likely because of the Cebu and Davao quakes from the past couple of months — and "women in STEM fields."
The highest entertainment-related topic was Netflix's "Squid Game" which figured at No. 6 overall. Other searched topics were digibooth, National ID, the NBA Finals match-up of the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Indiana Pacers, and Khan Academy.
In fact all of the Top 10 topics under the Shows or Series category were streaming platform releases, most of them from Netflix too like "When Life Gives You Tangerines," "Bon Appétit, Your Majesty," "Monster: The Ed Gein Story," and "Friendly Rivalry."
Completing Shows or Series were Prime Video's "Head Over Heels," local production "Ang Mutya ng Section E" from Viva One, and outliers "S Line," "How To Tame A Silver Fox" and "Forever After, Never Again."
Joining the 2025 midterm elections and earthquakes, and related items, as most-searched news stories in the Philippines were the Maguad siblings that featured on "Maalaala Mo Kaya," the International Criminal Court, and the conclave of the new pope.

As evident by Oklahoma City Thunder vs. Indiana Pacers appearing in the overall list, basketball-related searches dominated the Sports category as NBA standings, FIBA Asia Cup, the Golden State Warriors, Eurobasket and Pacers star player Tyrese Haliburton filled the list.
Notable local Sports searches were Manny Pacquiao's comeback fight against Mario Barrios, the Premier Volleyball League, and young tennis star Alex Eala who was also the most-searched female personality — beating fellow Filipinas Bea Borres, AJ Raval, and Andi Eigenmann, as well K-pop girl group Twice.
The male counterpart was Andy Byron, the tech company executive that went viral after being caught cheating at a Coldplay concert, finishing ahead of the titular criminal subject in "Monster: The Ed Gein Story."
Completing the Top 5 of the most-searched male personalities were singer d4vd, Pope Leo XIV, and Dionela (who was the only Filipino in the Top 10 along with Public Works and Highways secretary Vince Dizon who was No. 7).
Dionela's "Marilag" was beaten by Earl Agustin's "Tibok" on the Songs list, though both were ahead of popular tracks "Multo" by Cup of Joe and "Golden" from Netflix's "KPop Demon Hunters."
The hit animated film was even topped by "Final Destination" on the Movies list, which also saw "Superman," "Thunderbolts" and "Minecraft" in the Top 5.
The original "Minecraft" game also placed No. 5 on the Games list, topped by "Grow A Garden" and sandwiched between them were "Sprunki," "Blue Lock: Rivals" and "Arise Crossover."
Google also listed a Farewells category where "Meteor Garden" star Barbie Hsu was the most-searched, followed by content creator Emman Atienza. Completing the Top 5 of that list were Pope Francis, actress Kim Sae-ron, and National Artist Nora Aunor.
