MANILA, Philippines — Progressive group Akbayan thanked over 2.7 million Filipinos who voted for them in Monday’s midterm polls, where they emerged at the top of party-list groups.
“This is more than double the votes we obtained in 2010 – and a soaring triumph from 2022, when we barely held on to the last seat,” Akbayan yesterday said.
“From the margins to the summit, this is a victory for hope, for love of country and for progressive politics,” the group added.
Akbayan cited some of its victories at the local government level: the group’s vice chair Tobit Cruz has been reelected as Taytay, Rizal city councilor; Fely Pedrablanca won as mayor of Tubajon in the Dinagat Islands; Ronalyn Pordan won as councilor in San Jose del Monte, Bulacan and Paul Senogat won a Pasig city council seat.
The group said it shared its victory with allies, such as Bam Aquino and Francis Pangilinan who are returning to the Senate.
“To Mamamayang Liberal party-list nominee Leila de Lima, who will stand in Congress with our representatives; Mayor-elect Leni Robredo, who brings light once again to Naga; Heidi Mendoza, whose first Senate run impressed many; Pasig Mayor Vico Sotto, for proving each day that trapo politics is not our only choice,” Akbayan said.
The group lauded Sen. Risa Hontiveros for her leadership and congratulated Kaka Bag-ao, who will serve anew as Dinagat Islands representative in Congress.
“With them, Akbayan will begin building a new democratic and reform bloc in Congress and in the Senate committed to people’s rights, welfare and defense of our sovereignty and democracy,” Akbayan said.
Lakas-CMD wins 104 House seats
Under Speaker Martin Romualdez’s leadership, the Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (Lakas-CMD) has secured its position as the most dominant political party in the House of Representatives, winning 104 seats in the midterm polls.
Seventy-nine incumbent Lakas-CMD lawmakers were reelected, while 25 new representatives won.
Romualdez was reelected as Leyte 1st District representative.
“Together with our partners in the Alyansa para sa Bagong Pilipinas, we will continue to push for laws that create jobs, protect the vulnerable, improve education and strengthen our democracy,” the Speaker said. — Mark Ernest Villeza
