MANILA, Philippines — Two-time Oscar-winning Australian actress Cate Blanchett will appear in the upcoming live-action sequel of "How to Train You Dragon," reprising her character from the animated films.
Entertainment outlet The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that Blanchett signed a deal to portray the Viking warrior Valka, whom she voiced in the "How to Train Your Dragon" sequels in 2014 and 2019.
Vallka is the mother of protagonist Hiccup, voiced by Jay Baruchel in the animated franchise and played by Mason Thames in the live-action remake that came out last year.
Screen franchise creator Dean DeBlois wrote and directed the live-action remake and will again take the helm for the sequel due for a 2027 release.
Last June, the live-action "How to Train Your Dragon" was well-received by critics and audiences alike, earning $636 million (P37.8 billion) globally — making it one of the year's highest-grossing films.

In that cast were Nico Parker, Julian Dennison, Gabriel Howell, Bronwyn James, Harry Trevaldwyn, Nick Frost and Gerard Butler as Hiccup's father Stoick the Vast whom he voiced in the animated movies.
The 2014 animated sequel saw Hiccup reuniting with the long-lost Valka as both try to take on warlord and dragon hunter Drago Bludvist.
With Butler and Blanchett officially on board, fans are pushing for other voice actors to cross over to live-action, like Drago's actor Djimon Hounsou and Eret voice actor Kit Harington.
DeBlois himself has teased the possibility of Baruchel and America Ferrera (the original voice of Astrid, now played by Parker) having a role in future projects.
