American actor Eric Dane has revealed he has been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
The "Euphoria" star disclosed his diagnosis in an exclusive report by People published Thursday.
"I have been diagnosed with ALS. I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter,” he said.
Dane added he feels lucky that he can continue working and that he will return to the set of "Euphoria" in the coming week. He also asked for privacy for himself and his family.
According to the Mayo Clinic, ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, affects motor neurons or nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. It causes these cells to degenerate over time, leading to muscle weakness and loss of muscle control.
ALS symptoms vary and may include trouble walking; weakness in the legs, feet, or ankles; slurred speech or difficulty in swallowing; weakness or clumsiness of the hands; twitching in the arms, shoulders, and tongue; behavioral or thinking changes; and more.
The ALS Association says that most ALS cases develop between the ages of 40 to 70, but anyone of any age can get ALS. Ninety percent of ALS cases also happen without any genetic cause.
There is no cure yet for this degenerative disease, but its symptoms can be managed through medications, physical and occupational therapy, speech therapy, and more.
Meanwhile, Dane is known for starring in HBO's drama series "Euphoria" as Cal Jacobs, the patriarch of the Jacobs family. He has also starred in the shows "Grey's Anatomy" and "The Last Ship," and movies like "Bad Boys: Ride or Die," "Burlesque," "Marley & Me," and more.
