MANILA, Philippines — As an individual trained in musical theater, Matty Juniosa is up to the task for whatever is asked of him.
The singer made waves around the world after receiving the Golden Buzzer on "Britain's Got Talent" following a soulful rendition of Prince's "Purple Rain."
During his audition, Matty shared he's been working in Glasgow, Scotland as a part-time waiter, this as he was completing a Musical Theatre degree from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.
Matty shared to Philstar.com in an exclusive video interview that he recently finished the program and is looking to pursue theater, regardless of how his "Britain's Got Talent" journey turns out.
Given how he changed "Purple Rain" to suit his vocals, Philstar.com asked him if he was eyeing musicals like "Wicked," "Miss Saigon," or "Dreamgirls," or if there was a particular kind of production he was interested in.
"Actually 'yung natutunan ko sa drama school was I can't box myself, I can't be the one to tell the audience that this is what I do," Matty said. " I need to let the producers, the panel of judges, the audience see na artist can be multiple things."
He even quipped that as much as he'd like to be the next "Asia's Songbird" Regine Velasquez, Matty reiterated he'd dabble in many things because he won't limit himself.
Coincidentally Matty has performed in front of Regine before, when he joined "Philippine Idol" before the pandemic and reached the Top 12.
"It would be no surprise to me if eventually one day you just see me in a classical musical, you hear me and eventually I become Jean Valjean. Anything can happen," Matty added, referring to the protagonist of "Les Miserables."
The singer shared he trained himself and his craft to fit different molds as he learned there are many different casting types and not a singular way to perform.
Matty also acknowledged being heavily influenced by R&B, soul, or "sassy" music but pointed out his showcase performance from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland included "King of the World" from "Songs for a New World."
"I don't want to box myself into a genre, but more than anything I think I'm just a servant of the arts," Matty ended. "Whatever the arts needs me to be, I'd love to be that. If I can fill the cup or I can be the vessel for that character, show, or song, might as well."
