MANILA, Philippines — The Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island erupted explosively at 2:55 a.m. on Tuesday, May 13, just a day after the elections, according to Phivolcs.

As of 4:30 a.m., state seismologists reported that the eruption lasted five minutes based on seismic and infrasound data. It produced a greyish voluminous plume of 3,000 meters above the vent, drifting west.

"Audible rumbling sounds of the eruption were reported in Brgy. Pula, Canlaon City, Negros Oriental and La Castellana, Negros Occidental," Phivolcs said, noting that pyroclasitc density currents also descended the southern slopes about two kilometers from the crater.

"Large ballistic fragments were also observed to have been thrown around the crater within a few hundred meters and caused burning of vegetation near the volcano summit," it added.

The following communities in Negros Occidental have been reportedly affected by the ashfall:

  • La Carlota City – Brgys. Yubo and Ara-al
  • Bago City – Brgys. Ilijan and Binubuhan
  • La Castellana – Brgys. Biak-na-Bato, Sag-ang, and Mansalanao.

State seismologists recorded 72 volcanic earthquakes during the first half of Monday, May 12, indicating ongoing magmatic unrest. The volcano remains at Alert Level 3.

Since May 11, Phivolcs has recorded 135 volcanic earthquakes, in addition to several volcano-tectonic events, indicating rock fracturing beneath the volcano.

Kanlaon last erupted explosively on April 8, generating a 4,000-meter-tall plume of ash and volcanic gases.
