MANILA, Philippines — A man who allegedly threatened to bomb the Commission on Elections (Comelec) has been arrested by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI).
According to a post-operation report sent to reporters, the suspect—identified as a Facebook user—had been posting comments in various groups offering a P5-million reward to anyone who would “bomb” all Comelec sites.
“He posted the following: ‘5 million reward to BOMB all COMELEC site @highlight,’” the NBI said.
The suspect was arrested on May 14 in Casili Hills Subdivision, Casili, Mandaue City. His post reportedly garnered 120 shares and several comments.
The NBI said it was tipped off after Justice Undersecretary Nicholas Ty and Comelec Region 7 Director Francisco Pobe alerted them about the online threat.
A hot pursuit operation was launched while the post was still active. The NBI said the suspect did not resist arrest and admitted that he was the owner of the Facebook account behind the post.
According to the report, the suspect may face charges under Presidential Decree 1727, which penalizes the malicious dissemination of false bomb threats, and Republic Act 11479 or the Anti-Terrorism Act of 2020.
Philstar.com asked Comelec Chairman George Garcia for a comment about the matter and he said: “Always (a) reliable partner, the NBI.”
