MANILA, Philippines — A freshman maritime student has died reportedly from hazing in General Trias, Cavite.
Police said they have a person of interest in connection with the death of Kenneth Alcedo, 19, who died at the General Trias Medical Hospital in Barangay Manggahan on Sunday.
The person of interest, identified only as JM, reportedly drove Alcedo to the hospital in a Mitsubishi Mirage.
Cavite police director Col. Ariel Red said that JM and Alcedo go to the same maritime school in Dasmariñas City.
“No parent should ever have to face the pain of losing a child in this manner. If proven to be hazing, this is a betrayal of trust and a grave violation of the law,” Red said.
Probers said Alcedo was reportedly alive when two men brought him to the hospital at around 2:11 p.m.
Despite efforts to save him, doctors said Alcedo died at around 3:35 p.m.
Doctors said Alcedo bore bruises in the thighs, which are common for victims of hazing.
General Trias police chief Lt. Col. Bismark Mendoza said the victim’s groin and buttocks had chili seeds, noting this is another sign of torture.
Video footage of a closed-circuit television camera installed in the hospital showed the men who brought Alcedo talking to doctors.
The men reportedly told doctors that Alcedo was a victim of hit-and-run.
They reportedly tried to leave the hospital immediately, but were stopped by security guards.
However, for still unknown reasons, the men managed to leave the hospital before probers arrived.
Another video showed three men walking along a street in Cavite after they abandoned the car used to transport Alcedo to the hospital.
Red urged anyone with information on people last seen with Alcedo to report to authorities.
