The Office of Civil Defense asks the public to report any suspected debris sightings to local authorities immediately

MANILA, Philippines – The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) has ordered relevant government agencies to ensure the safety of residents along coastal areas that may be affected by China’s rocket launch set for Saturday, January 25.

The OCD said in a press statement on Saturday that three designated drop zones have been identified where parts of the rocket are expected to land. These include areas approximately 85 nautical miles from Rozul Reef, 40 nautical miles from Puerto Princesa in Palawan, and 33 nautical miles from Hadji Muhtamad in Basilan.

The Long March 8A rocket is expected to be launched between 5:53 pm and 6:42 pm from the Wenchang Spacecraft Launch Site in Hainan, China. The rocket was developed for 28 months and underwent at least 44 ground tests, according to the official Xinhua news agency.

The OCD has advised the Philippine Coast Guard, the Department of the Interior and Local Government, Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources–National Mapping and Resource Information Authority to issue temporary restrictions and notices in the identified drop zones.

The agency also said that the Philippine Space Agency “warns against retrieving or approaching any debris as remnants may contain toxic substances such as rocket fuel,” advising the use of personal protective equipment in case the need arises.

“The public is urged to report any suspected debris sightings, either at sea or on land, to local authorities immediately,” OCD said in its release. “As the Philippines prepares for this significant event, officials stress the importance of public safety and vigilance throughout the day.” – Rappler.com
